My 1st (Unpublished) News Story!!

I'm in a Journalistic Writing class at my high school and I'm really excited about it. Since journalism is one of my possible majors, I'm trying to soak in every last bit of information that my teacher throws at me. Right now we are on our "News Story Writing" unit and our homework assignment was to find a news story and write about it. Since the show choirs were having their big choreography weekend this week and I'm in show choir, I decided that it would make for a great news story. It won't be published because my teacher claims that no one in high school actually cares about show choir, except for show choir kids (I beg to differ). But I am still really excited about it because it is my first actual news story and since I'm so excited, I've decided to post it on this blog. Keep in mind that this is only the rough draft and it is also my FIRST news story, so don't expect anything great. In fact, except complete crap. I'm still learning.

Show Choirs Endure Long Choreography Weekend
By: Mikayla Bessey

As most students were fast asleep, the Rock Bridge High School show choirs, "Satin N' Lace" and "City Lights", were back at school, dancing their hearts out at 7:45 am on Saturday morning for their annual choreography weekend.

Twice a year, once in September and once in October, the show choir teams have a weekend where they learn the upcoming year's choreography in the time span of two days. "So basically we just learn the choreography for our show. It's like 10 hours on Saturday and 5 hours on Sunday. We learn two out of our five numbers for our show." junior Sam Ryan said.

Show choir director, Mike Pierson brings in choreographers Tammy Walker from Columbia and Keven _____ from New York City to create and teach the choreography. The show choirs get a couple of 5 minute breaks and a lunch break during the weekends. The show choir parents provide snacks and drinks to help the show choir participants keep their energy up during the excruciating 10 hour rehearsal.

For most of the show choir kids, this is a very challenging weekend, mainly because of the long hours and endless dancing. Because of their upcoming trip to Show Choir Nationals in Nashville in April, the show choirs are pushing themselves harder than ever."It was tough and it was long, but it was fun to get to know all the girls a little better. It was a fun time, but it was difficult." sophomore Leslie Walker said

But once the muscle cramps, bruises, and sweaty clothes are gone, the show choir teams are happy that they all endured the choreography weekends. "It was intense, I felt like throwing up for half of it. But, it's been a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. It's going to be so awesome when we finally get to the end and I can't wait."  sophomore Emily Mertens said.

It's short, but I'm proud of my little mess.
XOXO
Mikayla

Good job, Mikayla! I like that the girl said she felt like throwing up half the time. You poor little dancy-gals!
