The LAST day of work...

This summer I took up a volunteering job at the University Hospital where I live. I want to be a doctor when I grow up, so I thought it would be a great experience for me. All in all, it ending up being a great experience for me and I will definitely be doing it next summer. For this "job" ( it was a non-paying job) I worked on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8am until 12pm. On Mondays I worked in the Medical Records department and on Tuesdays I worked in the hospital gift shop.

Medical Records: I had 2 main supervisors in this department. Their names were Janet and AJ. Janet cracked me up because she is an old lady (maybe in her 60s) that LOVES to talk. I would be filing papers and she would come up and just talk and talk to me forever! It was a super nice break and I learned all sorts of stuff about the hospital (and about her life). It was hilarious because she worked in a cubicle and when it was time for lunch, she would put up an "Out for lunch" sign on the outside cubicle wall and then fall asleep. Hahaha. She was super nice. AJ is a really old indian lady (like 70s) who was my "main" supervisor while I was there. Her name isn't really AJ, but no one can pronounce her real name, so they all call her AJ. She was really sweet to me and taught me how to do a ton of stuff. She was always concerned about the medical files- like I'm pretty sure she cares about them as much as she does her own child- but I loved that about her, it showed that she really loved her job. All in all, I did like working in Medical Records (on some days). I say "on some days" because a lot of the time they really didn't have much for me to do. One day they even told me "Oh just push in all the files". I was there for 4 hours. Pushing in files. It was excruciating. But when they actually had something for me to do, I really enjoyed it. On the last day (yesterday), AJ was talking to me before I left and she gave me the most heartfelt good-bye. She said, " You did really good job. I really proud of you. If you ever need someone to tell someone else about you, just have them call me. You a good worker. Good job." Then she gave me a hug. A hug! I was so shocked, but so happy at the same time. I'm pretty sure the #1 thing I will miss the most about Medical Records is working with AJ.

Gross. Me working in my little desk.

Just making some blank medical files...

And again...

I think you can tell from these pictures how exciting this job is...
Gift Shop: OH.MY.GOSH. I LOVED working in the Gift Shop. Like it was the perfect job for me. I was always doing something and it wasn't boring stuff, it was super fun stuff. I would make displays, wash windows, make balloon arrangements, stock up supplies. It was just FUN. My supervisors' names were Roberta and Blanche. Roberta was probably in her 50's, she seemed pretty gruff at first, but once I got to know her, I really started to like her. She reminded me of a good family friend that my family has. Blanche was probably like 80 and she just cracked me up. She was pretty quiet, but she was always happy and so sweet. Today, Roberta bought a whole bunch of fudge and chocolate for the gift shop and she told Blanche " Don't get mad at me, but I went kinda went crazy on the candy and fudge." And Blanche said "It's chocolate, why would I complain? I love chocolate!" Haha. All in all, I really loved this job. There was always something to do and it was always interesting.

Carrying flower arrangements over to the Orthopedic Institute...

My work (: ( I took this while I was taking the flowers over to the orthopedic institute today.)

We're already setting up the Christmas displays at my work already... Crazy. This is what I did for part of the time I was there today.

Unwrapping and pricing the ornaments. (: Fun Fun. See that blue contraption? That's a pricing gun. It's probably the coolest thing I've ever used...

I'm actually kinda sad it was my last day today :( But at least I'll have next year!!

XOXO

Mikayla
